Spinach potato fried balls-South Indian style

Last weekend when me and and my husband were sitting for a cup of a tea, i wanted to make something spicy and different for us to have with it . I Experimented this recipe with the dosa batter i made  in the morning for breakfast and spinach potato curry for lunch. It came out so crispy and tasty that my husband just ate a bit too out of way than his usual tea snack quantity. Here i share with you this delicious recipe which you can try with your left over dosa batter and smashed potatoes as well.

1. For the batter (Dosa/Indian Pancake batter)


  • Black whole gram lentils (Urad dal)- 1 cup
  • Rice -3 cups
  • Whole heat flour- 1/2 cup
  • chilli powder- 1 tsp
  • Salt

Preparation of batter

  • Wash and soak black gram lentils and rice in seperate bowls for atleast 7 hours or over night
  • After soaking grind the lentils first and make sure the amount of water you use  is less while grinding place ths batter from the mixer in a bowl
  • Now grind rice again making sure you use less amount of water enough for a thick paste.
  • Mix both the batters together and let it ferment  7 hrs or overnight in a large bowl as the batter quantity increases after fermentation
  • Mix 1/2 cup of wheat flour , chilli powder and salt and stir properly, the batter should be thick to hold the stuff inside.
    Note: If you want to keep aside the batter for dosa/pancake , do not add wheat flour and chilli powder, just add salt and some water to make it loose for the pancake/ dosa

3. Method of preparation for the fried balls : 

  • Heat oil in a frying pan
  • Make the potato stuff into round balls and keep aside
  • Dip the stuffing in the thick batter making sure there is enough batter covering the stuffing
  • Drop the batter immediately and carefully into the oil
  • Let the balls fry till golden brown , remove excess oil using a napkin and serve hot with tomato ketchup, dip or any chutney will go with it.
